Unemployment Continues and Increases Around Illinois

"WJBD News Unemployment in Marion County Is Now 9.9%
The unemployment rate in Marion County increased one-tenth of a percent in May. Labor Market Economist Dennis Hoffman says the rate of 9.9 percent is also a tenth of a point higher than in May of last year and translates into 1,700 on the unemployment roles.
There is very little change one way or another in employment or unemployment in the last few months. Most of the employment activity has been in seasonal type jobs. Construction is still pretty strong especially on roadwork and some commercial projects. There were also advances on liesure and hospitality, wholesale and retail trade," said Hoffman. "Healthcare remains one of the strong industrial sectors, which has it has been for many years and continues to be a place where there are job opportunities.
Marion County is currently tied for the tenth highest unemployment rate in the state. It is the highest rate in South Central Illinois.

Unemployment rates in Illinois increased slightly from April 2013 to May, and they're still a bit higher than this time last year, according to data released by the U.S. Department of Labor and the Illinois Department of Employment Security.
